Cannabis is too often put into the same category as opioids, while drug dependency must be viewed entirely differently to addiction, a leading prescriber has said, as concerns grow over a New South Wales probe into cannabis prescribing and dispensing.

Dr Jim Connell said there were “good and bad” elements to the investigation by the NSW Pharmaceutical Services Unit (PSU), with the action reminding the industry that it must prescribe “medically appropriate” amounts of THC.

  1. It seems quite bizarre that swapping opioids for cannabis would be perceived as a bad thing. Can the PSU point to how many deaths relate directly to opioids vs cannabis? I believe over 1,000 accidental deaths in 2021 directly due to opioid overdose and none as a direct cause of a cannabis overdose. Surely if Drs are changing out opioids for cannabis, and the patient is happy with the outcome, that’s a major step forward for reducing harm!
